Official State Motto of Oregon
Oregon designated "She Flies With Her Own Wings" as the official state motto in 1987, replacing "The Union" (adopted in 1957, and still appears on the state seal). All State Mottos
The phrase originated with Judge Jessie Quinn Thornton (1810-1888), a Supreme Court Justice of the Provisional Government of Oregon, and appeared on the territorial seal in Latin: "Alis Volat Propriis."
