Utah designated the beehive as official state emblem along with the state motto ("industry") in 1959. Industry is associated with the symbol of the beehive - early Utah pioneers had few resources available and had to rely on their own "industry" to survive. Utah also designates the honeybee as state insect symbol. The beehive is also featured on the state flag and state seal of Utah, and the beehive cluster is the state's astronomical symbol.
