The Lincoln Memorial Monument

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States and a national symbol of unity and wisdom, is immortalized in a marble statue inside the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington D.C. All D.C. Landmarks - All National Landmarks

These words are carved above Lincoln's statue: "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever."

On either side of the statue, President Lincoln's two most famous speeches are carved; The Gettysburg Address and his 2nd Inaugural Address. The Lincoln Memorial has been the scene of many notable events, including the 1963 march on Washington and Dr. King's "I have a Dream" speech.
