Hawaii designated the pahu, a type of Hawaiian drum (hula drum), as the state's traditional musical instrument in 2015 (the ukulele was adopted as the state's modern musical instrument symbol). All Music Symbols
The legislation reads; "The pahu is established and designated as the official kahiko musical instrument of the State" ("kahiko" translates as "old").
