Official State Song of West Virginia

In 2014 West Virginia adopted "Take Me Home Country Roads" by John Denver, Taffy Nivert, and Bill Canoff as an official state song. West Virginia recognizes three other state songs; "West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home" adopted in 1947, "The West Virginia Hills" adopted 1961, and "This is My West Virginia" adopted in 1963. All State Songs

"Take Me Home Country Roads" is played after every West Virginia University basketball and football game, and John Denver himself sang it in person at the dedication of Mountaineer Field in Morgantown in 1980.

Lyrics to "Take Me Home Country Roads"

Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains,
Shenandoah River.
Life is old there, older than the trees,
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.

All my memories gather round her, miner’s lady,
Stranger to blue water.
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine,
Teardrop in my eye.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.

I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me,
The radio reminds me of my home far away.
And driving down the road I get a feeling that
I should have been home yesterday, yesterday.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.
