Highland County Maple Festival

Official State Maple Festival of Virginia

The Highland County Maple Festival was designated the official state maple festival of Virginia on April 4, 2014. All State Holidays & Events

Held on the second and third weekends of March, the Maple Festival has been an annual event in Highland County, Virginia, since 1958. Thousands of visitors are drawn to this rural part of Virginia each year to celebrate the “opening” of the trees and observe the process of maple syrup-making.

Potomac bluestone was designated the official rock of Washington D.C. in 2015 (Law 20-220, the "DC Rocks, So We Need One Act of 2014"). All State Rocks

From D.C.'s Office of the Secretary; "Quarries along Rock Creek, and at Little Falls, Maryland, provided Washington, DC with building stone from the Piedmont’s Sykesville Formation, also known as Potomac Bluestone (Gneiss)."

Capitalsaurus

Official Dinosaur Fossil of The District of Columbia

Capitalsaurus was designated the official dinosaur symbol of the District of Columbia on September 30,1998. All State Dinosaurs

A single fossilized dinosaur vertebra was discovered In 1898 during sewer work at 1st and F Streets. Researchers at the Smithsonian concluded this fossil was unique - it didn't match any other specimen known at that time, but was thought to possibly be an ancestor of the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
