The Virginia Senate designated the eastern garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) as the official state snake in February 2016 (also the reptile symbol of Massachusetts). All State Reptiles

It was 11-year-old Aiden Coleman who championed the garter snake as a symbol of Virginia. Aiden sought support from his state representative (Del. Brenda Pogge, R-James City County, who became HB335's patron) and helped to make his case to lawmakers in Richmond.

President Barack Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act into law on May 9, 2016, designating the bison as the official mammal of the United States. The American bison is also an official symbol of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Wyoming. All State Mammals

Wyoming observes "Native American Day" as an official state holiday on the second Friday of May. All State Holidays

From Wyoming Statutes: "In recognition of the North American Indian, the second Friday in May is designated as "Native American Day". The day shall be appropriately observed in the public schools of the state, by state and local government and by organizations within the state."

In 2016 Governor Matt Mead signed into law a measure designating Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata wyomingensi) as the official state shrub. Wyoming also recognizes a state grass. All State Plants
