Peach

Peach

The peach (Rosacea, genus Prunus, Species P. persica) was designated the official state tree fruit of Alabama in 2006 (the blackberry is the state fruit, adopted in 1949. There are thirty to forty varieties of peaches grown commercially throughout Alabama, harvested from early May to early September.

The elegant Alabama Theatre for the Performing Arts was designated the official historic theatre of Alabama in 1993. Built in downtown Birmingham by Paramount Studios in 1927 as a showcase for Paramount films and home to "The Mighty Wurlitzer" organ, the Alabama theatre has hosted historic figures of stage and screen such as John Barrymore, Roy Rogers, and Tallulah Bankhead.  All state Arts & Drama

Blackberry

Official State Fruit of Alabama

Alabama designated the blackberry (Rubus, R. occidentalis) as the official state fruit in 2004 after a campaign led by the third graders at Fairhope Elementary School (guided by teachers Susan Sims and Amy Jones). The peach has also been officially recognized as the state tree fruit of Alabama in 2006.

Johnstone's Junonia

Johnstone's Junonia

Johnstone's Junonia (Scaphella junonia johnstoneae) was designated the official state shell of Alabama in 1990. The Johnstone's Junonia seashell (home of a deep-water marine mollusk) is found only in Alabama waters.

The shell was named in honor of Kathleen Yerger Johnstone (an amateur conchologist from Mobile, Alabama who made seashells popular through speeches and books).
