Tennessee designated square dancing as the official state folk dance in 1980. All State Dances

Legislation states; "Among the traditions (of our ancestors) that have survived intact is the square dance, a uniquely attractive art form that remains a vibrant and entertaining part of Tennessee folklore."

Official State Declamation of Tennessee

"I Am Tennessee" by Major Hooper Penuel (a life-long resident of Middle Tennessee) was designated the official state declamation of Tennessee by House Joint Resolution No. 171 of the 95th General Assembly.
